    • After June Roster Meeting ALL rosters are frozen for remainder of season,  unless changes are approved by Executive.

    • After May meeting all NEW teams rosters are frozen for remainder of season, unless changes are approved by Executive.  (This includes not being able to pick up players prior to Roster/June meeting to field a team.)

  • Discussed the starting of the year not being done on Fridays anymore as the city does not prepare the fields for then due to the long weekend.

    • The question was asked do we start the league on that Sunday night or Monday night following.

  • Discussed the field conditions with the infield being hard as a rock and the grass not being cut.

    • The city did state that they will not being doing any more maintenance days for the remainder of the season.

  • Next item was the A division reps were looking to see about having the 1-1 count brought in just for their division only.

    • The reps for A were all on board for this.  This will be brought in starting Thursday June 13th and we will bring it to the umpire’s attention.

  • The umpires have brought to our attention that there has been consumption of alcohol and marijuana in the dugouts.

  • We wanted to reiterate that for reporting in the scores, the winning team is always to call in the score and the instance of a draw the home team is responsible for reporting.  (Both teams are encouraged to report for top 3 batters and pitcher).

    • Peter asked if anyone had any issues with the new method.

  • Gordie and Tim have provided updates on the All-Star weekend.

    • The tournament will be two days now (July 13th & July 14th tentatively)

    • The tournament will be held over on the west side using Memorial Softball field and wooden bats.

    • Moosehead will be sponsoring this with keg and cases of beer.

    • Shooters will be providing us with lots of drink specials and free pool and will be the All-Star headquarters.

    • We are looking to have teams submit 4 players (2 for sure, and 2 backups).

  • It was discussed on how we are trying to maintain the rain out games and booking time slots.

  • We discussed the issue of field closures with the city and the umpires.

    • The fields are closed by umpires after the 3pm approval of the city.

    • The fields do not get closed all at once if one field is closed.  It is all as per the decision of the umpire at said field.

  • We discussed the issue with the lineup cards with some teams getting the carbon copies.

    • We will be looking to see about getting more cardboard lineup cards by this Saturday.

  • The July meeting is TBD.

LEAGUE MEETING IN 1 WEEK

April 10, 2019

Next Official League Meeting is April 17 at Shooters. Start time is 7pm.

Reminder $500 is due from all teams at this meeting.  For teams that wish to pay by e-transfer you can send it to me directly and I will issue a receipt to you at the meeting. My email is petermcmenamon@bellaliant.net .  Use softball as a password. It may not ask for one as I have it set up for automatic deposit.

Next month we will likely have the group email set up for e-transfers.

Paul has provided me a list of fines and credits for last year for each team. I can go over that with you at the meeting (if applicable).

Also, we have been advised that Harold is going to step down as our league statistician. On behalf of the executive we’d like to thank Harold for all the time and work he has put into this position over the past several years. We’d ask anyone that is interested in taking on the league statistician position to please contact us. At this time we are not sure exactly what the position will entail pending the vote on league constitution changes that could impact the website and Moose line. But we would like to have someone in place after the April meeting as we will be working on schedules, etc for the start of the season in May.

Thanks!!

PROPOSED CONSTITUTION CHANGES

April 6, 2019

Here is what I have so far. Please let us know if we are missing anything or if there are new ones you’d like to add.

1. Start hitters with a 1-1 count

2. All pitchers to wear a pitching mask. Teams to supply the masks for their pitchers to use.

3. If a player hits a HR when his team is already up 2 HRs, it is a single and not an out. Runners on base advance 1 base.

4. For games played in larger fields (more than 300 feet- Stephenson field for our league at this time) no limit on HRs hit per team or per game.

5. Hitters do not have to run the bases on HRs. Any runner on base can also walk off the field to save time.

6. If a team fails to call in a score by 2am it is no longer an automatic loss. Instead the team would be fined $20.

7. Allow constitutional changes to be voted on by team reps at any league meeting instead of once a year at the April meeting.

8. Review date when rosters are due (currently at the June meeting for returning teams and April meeting for new teams).

9. Do we want to continue using the Moose Line to report scores?

10. Do we want to continue using the current website or switch to an alternative (Facebook group for team reps is a suggestion submitted).

11. Going forward (not this meeting) have constitutional changes emailed to team reps ahead of time. This allows teams to discuss as a group and then have the reps submit their responses to the executive. The results would be given by executive at the next meeting.

12. When a team that is up 2HR and hits a HR- it is considered a foul ball (strike) instead of an out. If the batter had 2 strikes at the time, it is an out.

13. Eligible player age be reduced from the current age of 18 to 16 with conditions.

  • 1 When hitting or on the bases they wear protective helmets until the age of 18.

  • 2 They do not play in the infield until the age of 18.

  • 3 They must be of the age of 16 when final rosters are turned in currently the June meeting.

14. Currently teams are required to give 72 hours notice to postpone a game. The city of Saint John passed a rule that they now require 5 days notice. We will require teams to provide 6 days notice for any postponement of games.

15. I propose that if a pitcher wears protective gear when there are two outs in an inning and the pitcher is on base we can have an additional substitute runner in addition to the already granted courtesy runners. If a substitute runner is granted that pitcher must pitch the following inning and be wearing one of the following protective equipment (shin pads,helmet/mask,chest protector). I find this will speed up between inning delays and encourage safety.

We will also post this on the League Website.

Thanks!!

UPDATE FROM THE EXECUTIVE:

March 21, 2019

Hey folks,

Just wanted to send out a post as a follow up to last weeks first league meeting of the season.

As you know, Paul Shea has decided to step down as League Treasurer after 36?!? years of service to the league. Clearly the feeling amongst the league is that nobody can replace Paul. He indeed has very big shoes to fill. We had the position open for applicants but at the meeting nobody was interested in taking on the job. After the meeting, the executive discussed the position and we realize that the league cannot function without a dedicated individual for this position- to handle the leagues finances and issue payments as required.

As a result, we believe one of us on the current executive should assume the position of treasurer going forward. I have agreed to take on this job. Having worked alongside Paul over the past year I have an understanding of what is required and I look forward to taking on the challenge.

So that being said, we also feel that it’s not fair to myself or the League for 1 individual to take on the responsibilities that 2 positions on the executive would require. As such, I will be stepping down as League President. There remains one year left on the term before the President position will be up. We would ask that anyone that is interested in running for President please reach out to us to discuss the position. We are posting this in advance of the next meeting where it will be voted on in an effort to give the league members enough notice and hopefully generate interest in the position.

Please feel free to reach out to Matthew Brown, Shawn Hanson or myself - or send a email to saintjohnslopitch@gmail.com.

Thanks everyone!

1ST LEAGUE MEETING FOR 2019
***MEETING MINUTES***

Wednesday, March 13, 7pm @ LBR

This meeting is for team reps for all returning and new teams. We will be reviewing the league finances heading into this season and going over the team costs for the upcoming season- along with payment schedules (no payments are due before the April meeting).

We will also be electing 2 executive positions at this meeting - Vice President and Treasurer. If anyone is interested in running for these positions please reach out to the executive for information or to let us know. Feel free to message myself or the other members or send an email to the group email address (saintjohnslopitch@gmail.com)
Paul will be stepping down as treasurer.

If anyone has items they’d like to add to the agenda for discussion please let us know.

Hope to see everyone next Wednesday!
